GISBORNE booted its highest score for seven years on Saturday as it closed back within one game of the BFNL top five and gained some valuable percentage.

The Bulldogs inflicted another heavy loss on the battling Castlemaine in a 173-point thrashing at Gardiner Reserve – 31.19 (205) to 4.8 (32).

It was the Bulldogs’ highest score since their tally of 31.22 (208) against Kangaroo Flat in the final round of the 2011 season.

“I was really pleased with the way the boys played today over the four quarters and with no injuries it was a good day,” said Bulldogs coach Clinton Young, who was sidelined again as he recovers from a calf injury.

“We had players all across the ground play their roles and trying to fit only six into the best was difficult.”

The Bulldogs had 12 players kick goals, including five players who slotted at least four – Ryan Baker (six), Jake Conolan (five), Ross Celano (four), James Fraser (four) in his first senior game of the season and Jack Scanlon (four).

The fast-starting Bulldogs were already more than 100 points in front by half-time when they led 111-8.

The hard-running Celano, who provided plenty of drive through the wing and off half-back, Patrick Trotta in the midfield, forward Baker and gun on-baller Matt Goodyear were the best four for the Bulldogs, who had skipper Jarad Lynch (elbow) a late withdrawal.

The Magpies, who kicked three of their four goals in the third term, had William Moran, Kalan Huntly and Jake O’Brien (two goals) battle hard on another tough day.
