MEDIA RELEASE FROM AFL CENTRAL VICTORIA RELATING TO BIRCHIP-WATCHEM PLAYER POINTS BREACH
THE AFL Central Victoria Region Commission has met and determined that the Birchip Watchem Football Club (BWFC) has been sanctioned for breaching the AFL Victoria Player Points System (PPS) Policy.

In accordance with the PPS Policy - the Commission found BWFC guilty of breaching the player points threshold in rounds one, two and three of season 2018. The Commission found that Birchip Watchem FC had breached the AFL Victoria Player Points Policy in that it had supplied an ‘incorrect declaration’ of a player’s points.
In accordance with the Policy, BWFC will lose its four premierships points for each of these games, the points will be awarded to their opponents.
Birchip Watchem’s score will also be annulled.
AFL Central Victoria Region General Manager Carol Cathcart said, “Birchip Watchem had only recently been informed of Stefan Pye’s 2017 best and fairest result, upon learning of this information, the club immediately contacted me to inform the Commission of the unintentional error.”
“Although it was a genuine oversight, clubs are required to complete sufficient due diligence on the history of their new players and inform the Commission if the player achieved a top five finish in club senior best and fairest in the previous year”, said Ms Cathcart.
The club used their full allocation of points in rounds one, two and three, with addition of one point for the correct point allocation for Stefan Pye the club exceeded their 43-point cap, however there was information in the player’s history of which they were not aware.
“The Commission took into account the unintentional nature of the breach and noted Birchip Watchem’s honesty and co-operation with this matter”, said Ms Cathcart. T
his highlights the importance of clubs using the standard player declaration when signing players to their club and ensuring all relevant information is detailed.
The ladder adjustments will be completed by close of business today.
