Curator of the Buda Textiles Exhibition Lauretta Zilles says the biennial event has become nationally important, as one of the few places textile artists can exhibit.
It’s not just a national competition though, Ms Zilles is pleased to see many local artists enter the exhibition.
“We’re very proud that Buda has the capacity to present an exhibition that also includes the local community as well as the nation,” she said.
“The judges every year have said that the quality of the exhibits was exceptional.
“It’s become something that’s really important across the nation now for textile artists.”
Entries push the boundaries of traditional textile-art. Artist have experimented with materials and fabrics.
The award-winning piece makes a political statement about the press being shut down in Cambodia.
Ms Zilles is confident visitors will come away with a very different idea of what textiles are about to what they began with.
She’s always amazed at the strength of textiles’ power to connect with people.
“Everybody’s been touched by textiles in some way or another,” Ms Ziles said.
“Many of the artists and many of the visitors have a strong connection with textiles through their mothers and their grandmothers passed down through the generations.”
