THE AFL career of Castlemaine’s Kane Farrell will get underway in Ballarat on Sunday when he plays his first game for Port Adelaide.

Having been an emergency for the Power the previous two weeks, Farrell was on Friday named in Port Adelaide’s final team of 22 for the game against the Western Bulldogs.

It’s also the game former Sandhurst player Fergus Greene will make his AFL debut in for the Bulldogs.

Farrell first played football with the Winters Flat juniors from under-10s to under-15s, before progressing to Castlemaine, while he also played under-15s, 16s and 18s with the Rural Bank Bendigo Pioneers.

The skilful 19-year-old was selected by the Power from the Pioneers with pick No.51 at last year’s National Draft.

“We’re really ecstatic for Kane. He had a lot of talent right from the word go, with great kicking skills in particular on his left foot, and he really worked hard in his final year to give himself an opportunity,” Farrell’s Pioneers coach of last year, Rick Coburn, said.

Farrell has kicked 20 goals as a half-forward for the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL this year and is among five changes for the Power.

In announcing his selection, the Power said on its website Farrell has “impressed with his composure and foot skills in the SANFL this season and he possesses an elite left foot and an ability to take a strong mark and break the lines with his pace”.

When they line up in opposing teams on Sunday at MARS Stadium, Farrell and Greene will join Paddy Dow (Carlton), Lochie O’Brien (Carlton), Kobe Mutch (Essendon), Jarrod Brander (West Coast) and Brent Daniels (GWS Giants) as draftees from the Pioneers to have made their AFL debuts this year.

“It has been great to see so many of them getting a game,” Coburn said.
