CENTRAL Victorian residents will have the chance to glimpse Mars in the skies this Friday – weather permitting – with the red planet to be as close to Earth as it has been since 2003.

Mars won’t be this close again until 2035.
The Astronomical Society of Victoria Bendigo Section is hosting a viewing on Trig Hill in Tucker Street, Golden Square, from 6pm to 8pm on Friday.
For a gold-coin donation, people can use BDAS telescopes to get good views of the eastern horizon where Mars will be rising in the early evening.
With good weather, astronomers believe there is a chance to see the bands of Jupiter, Saturn’s rings and the craters on the Moon.
