Two women are hoping to spread awareness and open up conversation around men’s violence against women with an event in Bendigo next week.
Julie Gardner and Tiffany Paynting will host a White Ribbon Night at the Lake View Hotel next Friday to support White Ribbon’s national primary prevention campaign, which provides education in schools, workplaces and the broader community.
Mrs Gardner said she became involved with the White Ribbon campaign through the local liquor accord when she was the publican of the Cambrian Hotel.
She worked to make her pub a welcoming space for women and a place that sparked conversation about the issue.
The recent death of young Melbourne woman Eurydice Dixon struck a chord and spurred her on to once again do something to prevent violence against women.
Mrs Gardner said people were not comfortable talking about the issue, but she hoped the relaxed environment of the pub would break down barriers and foster conversation.
Women are at least three times as likely as men to experience violence from an intimate partner and, on average, a woman is murdered by her current or former partner every week in Australia.
Meanwhile, 300,000 women each year experience violence from someone other than a partner.
White Ribbon will receive $5 from every $20 ticket for the event, while the Lake View Hotel will donate $1 from every drink sold on the night.
The night will feature entertainment from musician Luke Owens, a silent auction and a raffle. Ticket holders will also receive a drink on arrival and appetisers.
For tickets, contact Mrs Gardner on 0488 477 669 or visit the Lake View Hotel. Mrs Gardner would also like to hear from anyone who can contribute to the event.
