The Victorian Treaty Advancement Commissioner Jill Gallagher AO will visit Bendigo on Monday to meet with the Aboriginal community.
The Victorian Treaty Advancement Commission is an Independent Office seeking to maintain momentum in developing a treaty.
The commission has called for a treaty as a formal agreement between Indigenous people in Victoria and the state government.
In March 2018, treaty legislation was introduced into the Victorian Parliament, after an Aboriginal Treaty Working group was established in July 2016.
In June, ‘Advancing the Treaty Process with Aboriginal Victorians Bill’ passed in the Upper House of the Victorian Parliament.
Two separate events in Bendigo will take place on Monday. A gathering for members of the Bendigo area’s Aboriginal community will take place at the Capital Theatre on Monday July 16 from 2-4pm. A general meeting will follow from 4-5pm.
