The warning remains in place in other parts of the state, namely the east Gippsland forecast district and parts of north east and west and south Gippsland districts.
UPDATE 12pm: SNOW briefly fell at Mount Macedon this morning, driving people to the region in the hopes of further flakes.
Luke Chapman, of the Top of the Range Tea Rooms, said there was some snowfall about 10am.
But it melted shortly thereafter, and there hadn’t been any snowfall since.
“It doesn’t feel like it’s cold enough to stick around,” Mr Chapman said.
He said it had been the quietest year for snow so far his seven years at the business.
But that could change, given Mr Chapman said mid-late July were peak period for snow in previous years.
The carpark at the tea rooms was full when the Bendigo Advertiser rang.
Mr Chapman said the snow footage the business posted on social media had already garnered about 10,000 views, and there had been more than 1000 hits on its snow cam.
Footage posted by Facebook page Macedon Ranges Weather has also been popular, with snow captured at Ashbourne about 9am.
Snow was forecast in parts of Victoria today, including the Macedon Ranges.
A severe weather warning for damaging winds still stands, with gusty conditions reported throughout the region.
Communities in the Bureau of Meteorology’s central and north central forecast districts remain most at risk of the gusts, compared with the rest of central Victoria.
The warning of damaging winds averaging 60 – 70kph, with peak gusts of 90 – 100kph, extends to the east Gippsland, south west, west and south Gippsland, and parts of north east and Wimmera forecast districts.
EARLIER: VICTORIA seems to have made it through the night without serious weather-related incident.
An SES spokesperson said there were 40 calls for assistance statewide, none of which were major.
Most of the calls were from the vicinity of the Mornington Peninsula, while central Victoria was relatively quiet.
But a severe weather warning remains in place, with damaging winds a likelihood in the Bureau of Meteorology’s central, east Gippsland, south west, north central, west and south Gippsland, and parts of north east and Wimmera forecast districts.
The warning area encompasses central Victorian communities including Maryborough and Kyneton.
Winds averaging 60 – 70kph are forecast over southern and mountainous areas of Victoria, with peaks of up to 90 – 100kph.
The bureau anticipates winds will ease over most inland areas this afternoon.
The anticipated winds are the product of a strong cold front over western Victoria, which is expected to sweep across the remainder of the state this morning, establishing a cold, vigorous and unstable southwesterly airstream over Victoria.
The SES advised people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
Maryborough is forecast to reach a top of 11 degrees today, with a high chance of showers during the day.
It’s also likely to be wet in Castlemaine, which is predicted to reach a top of 10 degrees.
Snow is expected above 900 metres in the north central area, which includes both Castlemaine and Maryborough.
Thunderstorms are a possibility during the morning and afternoon, along with gusty winds and hail.
The bureau is predicting a top of nine degrees in Kyneton today, with a 90 per cent chance of showers.
Snow is expected to fall above 900 metres, and thunderstorms, gusty winds and hail are all possibilities for the morning and afternoon.
Bendigo is expected to reach a top of 12 degrees, with a high chance of showers and the potential for hail.
Northwest to southwesterly winds reaching speeds of 30 – 40kph are forecast for the morning, shifting southwesterly in the middle of the day, then tending westerly and slowing to speeds of 15 – 20kph in the evening.
