The Bendigo Theatre Company production stars Denton Arthur in the lead role. It is Arthur’s first show in 12 years and his first in Bendigo since 2000.
“My last Bendigo show was Godspell and my last role was Bottom in A Midsummer Nights Dream in Melbourne, 2006,” he said.
“When I stopped performing it was around the death of my mum who was my biggest supporter.
“It was weird doing (theatre) without her as one of my biggest fans but, now, I feel like I’m ready. Being on stage is like being in my happy place.”
Arthur’s decision to return to the stage came when he saw a role that would suit his voice.
“Unfortunately, there are not a lot of baritone lead roles in shows. That was the first thing that sparked my interest,” he said.
“But I didn’t go in expecting the lead – I haven’t performed for 12 years, I just wanted to get back into it.
“One of the main challenges has been learning about Jewish culture and getting a deep understanding around the notions of tradition.”
After the cast and crew’s final rehearsal on Tuesday, Arthur said the cast had finished on a really high note and gave the cast a chance to take pride in their work.
“We’re really used to the space now. There are a couple of things that need tweaking but you don’t want to be perfect on the last rehearsal,” he said.
“You’ve got to give yourself that moment when you can say ‘yep, we’ve done well’. I’ll be sure to take those moments when I can.”
For director Bevan Madden, the days – and nights – leading up to opening night have been hectic but rewarding.
“It’s been full on. Everyone involved in backstage has had massive days. A 12 or 14 hour day can be a shock to the system,” he said.
“But everything that was a minor issue is ironed out. My biggest challenge has been making sure to communicate my vision effectively.
“It’s a skill that’s hard to develop but one I think I got better at.”
Madden will be in the audience for opening night.
“I’m immensely proud of the cast and crew and excited to see it all together in its entirety,” he said.
