The sculpture was commissioned to commemorate the contribution of General Sir John Monash to Australian military history.
The sculpture was unveiled on the centenary of the First World War battle of Hamel, which was planned and directed by Monash.
AWM director Dr Brendan Nelson said Monash deserved to be remembered as a great Australian, not restricted to his accomplishments as a military leader but also for his efforts to rebuild a divided nation post war.
“At le Hamel, Monash commanded an operation in which Australian and American soldiers fought beside each other for the first time,” Dr Nelson said.
“A series of stunning victories would ensue – Amiens, Mont St Quentin, and the capture of Péronne, and the breaking of the Hindenburg line.”
