Winds gusts could reach 110 kilometres per hour in alpine parts of the state on Thursday afternoon and early evening.
Gusts of 90-110 kilometres per hour are predicted through much of central Victoria.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned gusts will likely continye into the evening and early hours of the morning, before easing early on Friday morning.
UPDATE Thursday 7.20am: The Bureau of Meteorology continues to warn of damaging winds in parts of central Victoria.
Winds of 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are expected to again develop across the warning area on Thursday morning and continue into the evening, mainly over elevated areas.
Kyneton and Daylesford are among the locations that could be affected.
The SES advises that people move vehicles under cover or away from trees, secure or put away loose items around the house, yard and balcony, and keep clear of any fallen power lines.
UPDATE Wednesday 6.25am: A severe weather warning remains in place for parts of central Victoria, with damaging winds expected to hit this morning.
Winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are expected across the warning area today, mainly over elevated areas.
The winds are expected to ease later today, but pick up again on Thursday.
Kyneton and Daylesford are among the locations that may be affected.
EARLIER Tuesday 12.21pm: Kyneton and Daylesford are among the areas forecast to possibly experience damaging winds on Wednesday, with a severe weather warning issued.
The Bureau of Meteorology says damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are expected to develop and extend across the warning area on Wednesday morning.
Senior meteorologist Christie Johnson said the winds would ease on Wednesday night, but were likely to strengthen again on Thursday.
“Then through Friday and the weekend, we’re expecting westerly winds in the wake of quite a strong cold front coming through on Friday, and those fresh to strong westerly winds will continue right through the weekend,” Ms Johnson said.
There would be some rain in parts of the state on Wednesday, she said, but most would start on Thursday and continue into the weekend.
Saturday is likely to bring the most rain.
For anyone heading to the mountains this weekend, snow is forecast to fall in the alpine region from Friday onwards.
