Dental prosthetics encompass full upper and full lower dentures, single dentures, partial dentures, denture repairs, placing names in dentures, and mouthguards.
“As we get older, some health conditions, some medications or just aging can cause changes in the condition of your mouth and can be affecting your choices in diet because of an inability to chew properly,” says dental prosthetist Anne Hughes. “Getting your dentures checked and possibly replaced or relined regularly can enable you to overcome the changes that take place with time.” Owner of Bendigo Prosthetic Centre & Dental Lab, Anne works alongside Sarah Thompson, who together have 40 years’ experience in providing central Victoria with quality denture and mouthguard care.
Anne has helpful advice for people with dentures, on issues such as care, comfort and ongoing maintenance. She recommends dentures be replaced every five to eight years and be cleaned morning and night in order to remove food particles and plaque. “Lightly brushing with toothbrush and toothpaste, denture soakers can also be used to clean dentures,” she says.
Anne says leaving dentures out at night gives your mouth and gums an opportunity to recover from the effort of supporting your dentures during the day. “If you choose to keep your dentures in overnight, always clean them thoroughly before you go to bed,” she says, adding that dentures should not be painful and if they hurt, it’s likely that something’s not quite right. “Visit your dental professional as soon as possible.”
