BetterBeef Network project leader Darren Hickey said the conference was targeted at beef producers who wanted to learn about what was going on within the industry domestically and internationally.
“Attendees will learn about the latest research and developments, and on-farm practices to improve productivity and profitability,” Mr Hickey said.
“We have designed the conference so that participants can choose from a range of topics which are of interest to them.”
The conference included a range of expert speakers discussing topics such as the beef super demand cycle, marketing cattle in the digital world, producing beef in high rainfall areas and developing on-farm water plans.
Mr Hickey said the conference was held in Bendigo due to the geographic importance of beef production throughout the region.
“Hopefully producers can network with others to learn new things and when they go back to their farms they will be able to try something different,” Mr Hickey said.
Victorian Farmers Federation livestock project manager Catherine James was at the conference to deliver the newly formed industry extension project Livestock Health & Biosecurity Victoria.
“Our focus is biosecurity and working with producers to adapt to any changes within the industry,” Ms James said.
“We’re here to network with producers to see what is currently topical and of interest to them.”
The initiative has been funded by the Cattle Compensation Fund and the Sheep and Goat Compensation Fund, and has been delivered by VFF Livestock.
MLX managing director Simon Quilty held a discussion about the ‘super demand cycle’ which identified a two-year cycle of beef prices, its impact on the supply/demand for beef exports and the influence of other competing meats within the market.
