Greene has been superb for Footscray in the Dogs’ past two VFL matches, earning high praise from coach Steve Grace.
Greene had 21 possessions, took 10 marks and kicked two goals in Footscray’s 41-point win over North Melbourne at the weekend.
The previous round he had 18 possessions and kicked two goals as the Dogs defeated Coburg.
“Fergus has shown a lot of maturity, he’s been displaying that most weeks and has been incrementally getting better, we’re super pleased with his ability to stand up at really important times,” Grace told westernbulldogs.com.au.
“Fergus’ biggest improvement has been in the mental side of his game – getting himself into a frame of mind, contest by contest – being able to carve up his game into many pieces, so that he doesn’t think he needs to have the ball in his hands to have an effect.”
Greene played the majority of his football with Sandhurst and the Pioneers as a key forward.
Graace and the Footscray coaching staff are starting to use the athletic 20-year-old in a midfield role.
“We’re trying to increase the amount of time he plays on the wing, as well as being a forward, because he has a great running capacity and has the ability to influence the game in a number of ways,” Grace said.
Greene was picked by the Western Bulldogs with selection 70 of the 2016 AFL National Draft.
Injuries restricted him to eight games in the VFL in 2017, with his best performance a five-goal haul against Werribee.
Greene has played 10 games this season and kicked 10 goals, including six in his past three matches.
This round the Footscray VFL team plays the Northern Blues at IKON Park at 10am on Saturday.
