Lachlan Sharp’s hamstring injury is worse than first thought and the BFNL’s leading goalkicker faces a lengthy stint on the sidelines.
The Strathfieldsaye forward received the results of scans on his hamstring on Friday and he was left frustrated by the outcome.
“The injury is where the graft was taken from my hamstring for my ACL,’’ Sharp said.
“Worst case scenario is six weeks, but I’m hoping to get back in four or five.
“I really didn’t think it was that bad. I didn’t think there was much to it, but that’s the way it goes, I guess.
“I’ll do the rehab and get back for the last few rounds. It’s frustrating, but we move on.”
Sharp had kicked 10 goals against South Bendigo last Saturday before he left the ground in the dying minutes of the game after feeling a twinge in his hamstring.
The left-footer originally expected to miss one or two weeks.
With two hamstring injuries in the space of half a season, Sharp said he’d look at modifying his training loads going forward.
“I’ve never injured my hamstring in that spot before. It’s different to the hamstring injury I had earlier this season,’’ he said.
“It was just a fatigue injury by the look of it. I probably have to look at limiting my workload at training… limit the amount of kicking I do at training and things like that.”
Sharp had kicked 46 goals in the previous four matches to take his season tally to 54.
He leads the Ron Best Medal by 23 goals from South Bendigo’s Kaiden Antonowicz (31), Kyneton duo Jake Ward (22) and Ethan Foreman (21), Eaglehawk’s Matt Gretgrix (21), Tiger star Rhys Magin (20) and Sandhurst coach Andrew Collins (19).
The injury probably puts paid to Sharp’s hopes of reaching the century mark for the second-straight season, but that matters little to the man himself.
The only goal in his mind is September.
“I just want to make sure I’m fit and ready to go for the finals,’’ Sharp said.
“Finals footy is what it’s all about.
“This is just a small speed bump. I’m used to them now.”
While the Storm will be without Sharp for at least a month, the news is better for Kallen Geary.
Geary left the field against South Bendigo because of a shoulder injury, but scans revealed no structural damage and he could return as early as next week’s blockbuster against Eaglehawk.
The Storm were forced to make five changes for Saturday’s clash with Kangaroo Flat at Dower Park.
Sharp, Geary, Shaun Dwyer, Bailey Henderson and Kellan Smith are all sidelined.
One of the five inclusions for the Storm is first-gamer Patrick Blandford, who was a member of the club’s under-18 premiership last year.
