Man in custody after alleged assault near Bendigo Marketplace entrance

A MAN has been taken into custody after an alleged assault near the entrance to Bendigo Marketplace on Thursday afternoon.

Police were called to the area about 1.30pm after a man suffered a cut to his head from an attack.

Police confirmed a person had been assaulted in the area.

Witnesses told the Bendigo Advertiser a store manager was struck to the head after following an alleged shoplifter out of the shopping centre.

The alleged attacker then attempted to flee the area before he was stopped by a group of people in front of the Discovery Centre.

He was then held on the ground before police arrived and he was taken to the Bendigo police station.

The victim suffered a cut to the head. Paramedics treated him at the scene.
