The modern vocal category has proved to be one of the most popular categories at the eisteddfod in recent years.
“It’s one that has grown from a one-day category to four days of entrants,” Bendigo Competitions Society music co-ordinator David Hague said.
“It’s probably 200 singers and most of them perform in several sections.
“Entrants come from South Australia, Melbourne and Echuca along with a large contingent from Ballarat and Bendigo.”
Mr Hague attributed the popularity of the modern vocal to television talent shows.
“Young people see those shows and want to sing that music,” he said. It’s good because they are the types of songs you can learn in your bedroom while singing into a hair brush.
The music component of the Bendigo Competitions Society eisteddfod finishes with the Leila Watson Memorial Music Championship at The Capital on Friday from 7.30pm.
