The CFA member, Zonta Club president, former councillor and friend of the Kyneton Museum received an Order of Australia Medal today for service to the community and to women.
Arriving in Kyneton in 1965 to live on a farm, Ms Walker immediately joined her local CFA.
She learned to drive a firetruck, was the Kyneton brigade’s chief radio operator for more than 40 years and served as the chair of the brigade from 2012 to 2016.
Ms Walker serves on local, district and international committees with Zonta, has led the friends of the Kyneton Museum group and served as a councillor for the Shire of Kyneton.
Ms Walker said it was a delightful surprise.
“I really was taken aback and am very grateful,” she said. “It is a lovely award but most of the things I have done have not been individual. So this is recognition of the teams of people I am involved in.”
