The warning had been in place for a total of 119 days, since February 7. On average, blue-green algae warnings at Laanecoorie last for 85 days.
Blue-green algae are a natural part of the freshwater river environment. Warm water temperatures, sunny days and high level of nutrients can lead to algae blooms, which can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals.
Blue green algae warnings are still in place for Cairn Curran Reservoir, Tullaroop Reservoir and Hepburns Lagoon.
