Victoria Police says its members will target key risks – speed, fatigue, distraction, and drink and drug driving – as the roads grow busier with people seeking to make the most of the long weekend.
“I ask motorists to be mindful of changing environment conditions, to have patience, plan ahead and drive to the road conditions. Simply, take your time,” Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said.
“Country deaths are over represented in the lives lost on our roads and with five out of the six deaths over the Labour Day long weekend on country roads it’s sadly a sobering reality.”
Police will patrol major arterials, tourist areas, main roads and back roads.
Operation Regal will begin Friday and end Monday.
The Transport Accident Commission has echoed Victoria Police’s call for people to take steps to stay safe, asking drivers to ensure they are up to the task before they get behind the wheel.
“Fatigue and speed are two of the major contributors to fatal collisions on regional roads and we’re imploring motorists to rest up the night before a trip and allow plenty of time to get to their destinations,” TAC road safety lead director Samantha Cockfield said.
The TAC will open four ‘pit stop’ sites at busy rest stops at the weekend, including in Marong on Monday.
These stops will have free coffees, sausage sizzles, prizes and family activities.
