The kindergarten’s new Food Forest includes a range of plants including fruit and vegetables, medicinal herbs and a chicken shed which is currently under construction.
Assisi Kindergarten director Kelly Walsh said the children would learn about the importance of environmental sustainability in an outdoor setting.
“The children can come and see the life cycle of plants and also how to care for the fruit and vegetable trees,” Ms Walsh said.
“Children, families and the community can observe ecosystems, birds, insects, and reptilian life; they can dig, create, grow and use their imagination.”
The children will be the caretakers for the Food Forest and will learn about the process of growing seeds to the final product.
“It’s really important that children learn where their food comes from and as well as the sustainability aspect,” Ms Walsh said.
“We’re hoping eventually we have enough fruit so we can supply it to the community.”
The garden was constructed with the assistance of a $6,084 grant from SUEZ waste management company.
