The Tigers were expected to score a percentage-boosting win at Princes Park, but the home side had other ideas.
Maryborough led by five points at quarter-time and four points at half-time before the Tigers broke clear to win 14.15 (99) to 8.6 (54).
“Full credit to Maryborough. They should have been further in front at half-time,’’ Kyneton coach Luke Beattie said.
“They were very impressive in the way they went about it, in particular their endeavour at the football.
“We pride ourselves on our stoppage work, but we had to change our game structure to get the ball outside of that drop zone. In the seven games we’ve played this year that’s rare that we’ve had to do that.”
Tigers’ star Rhys Magin lifted his side with five goals in a best on ground performance, while Jayden Exell was good down back and Jordan Mangan impressed in the ruck.
“Apart from those three players we struggled to find consistent performers,’’ Beattie said.
Kyneton key forward Dan Davie was reported for striking.
The Magpies had Jacob Long, Jayden Hooper, Luke Bucknall and Brady Neill play well.
Defensively, the Magpies are improving. Sunday’s game was the third time this year they’ve kept an opponent below 100 points.
The last season they restricted three opponents to less than 100 points was 2014.
