However, it was not difficult for Jorin Sullivan to get a good look at one last week – he spotted an owl in the underground car park of Bendigo Marketplace, about noon on Thursday.
He said he saw it sit there for about 10 minutes, before it flew away to a nearby tree.
The Australian Museum says the preferred habitat of Barn Owls is “open, often arid (dry) country, such as farms, heath and lightly wooded forest”.
The birds are mostly active at night – rather than the middle of the day - and during the day tend to roost on concealed tree branches.
