The 46-year-old man from Baringhup died after he was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition hours after his vehicle ran off Fogartys Gap Road and into a tree.
Investigators have been told a utility was travelling west along Fogartys Gap Road at about 1pm when it veered across the road and collided with a tree.
Sergeant Jacobs said SES members helped free the man from the vehicle, which was “extensively damaged” from the “high impact” crash.
“It was a good hour or so that they had to take to get the man out of the driver’s seat,” he said.
Police will now prepare a report for the Coroner.
The fatality raises the number of deaths in 2018 on Victorian roads to 87. At the same time in 2017, there were 100 fatalities.
UPDATE 5.19pm: Police have appealed for information following a serious crash near Maldon this afternoon.
A 46-year-old man has been airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in a critical condition several hours after his vehicle ran off Fogartys Gap Road and into a tree.
Central Goldfields Highway Patrol Sergeant Noel Jacobs said the Ford ute the man was driving was believed to have been travelling west before it crossed into the opposite side of the road and struck a large tree about 1pm.
Police investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said a man in his 40s was in a critical condition with head, leg and chest injuries
Police have asked that anyone with information about the crash call the Central Goldfields Highway Patrol at Maryborough Police Station on 5460 3300.
UPDATE 1.23pm: A MAN has sustained life-threatening injuries in a single-vehicle car crash near Maldon.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said an air ambulance was on its way to Fogartys Gap Road, where the crash occurred about 1pm today.
It is believed the car crashed into a tree.
The spokesperson said a man in his 40s was in a critical condition with life-threatening injuries, including a serious knee injury.
They believed the man was trapped in the car.
Emergency services have closed the road near the scene of the crash as they respond.
EARLIER: EMERGENCY services are responding to reports of a car crash near Maldon.
A collision at Fogartys Gap Road, near the intersection of Bendigo-Maldon Road, was called in about 1pm today.
Emergency services are on their way to the scene.
