Newington was built by stonemason James Brierly in the late 1860s, he was also known for constructing Specimen Cottage, which is Bendigo’s oldest building.
The property has been listed by Barry Plant Bendigo and it is believed architect William Beebe carried out alterations in the late 1890s which included the home’s cast-iron trimmed front facade.
Barry Plant Bendigo director Bill Williams said Newington was a testament to the historic architecture of Bendigo.
“Whoever is fortunate enough to secure this building is purchasing a priceless piece of local history,” Mr Williams said.
The property has recently received modern upgrades including smart home technology, programmable hydronic floor and skirting board heating and also new appliances.
The historic charm of the property remains with stained glass windows, original Baltic pine floors and cast iron veranda posts.
The home is expected to attract attention from buyers, as it sits on 600 square metres with rear access via Rosalind Street.
The property is also in close proximity to the View Street arts precinct, restaurants, shops and sporting facilities.
Newington will be sold via tender which concludes on Tuesday June 12.
Inspections will be available throughout May and June.
