The Bloods were forced to come from behind to overcome a determined Sandhurst at Harry Trott Oval on Sunday.
A two-goals to nil first quarter had the Dragons in front by 15 points at quarter time.
The Bloods were able to reduce the margin to seven points at half time and three-points at three quarter time, before finishing strongly with their own two-goals to nil final quarter to win 5.7 (37) to 3.9 (27).
It was the Bloods’ fourth win in five matches and has them level on points with top-placed Kyneton.
Aden Shanahan booted two-goals for South Bendigo, which was well served by Isaac Murphy and Jackson Hufer, while Matthew Wilkinson and Tyron Papallo were best for Sandhurst.
At Kyneton, a Tigers win was rarely in doubt after they jumped to 29-point lead at quarter time against Kangaroo Flat.
The Roos were able to peg the margin back to 19-points at half time, but the home side ran out winners 10.17 (77) to 6.3 (29).
Ben Xiriha and Corey Pertzel (three-goals) were among the best for Kyneton, while Khy Sawyer and Jack Hickman (three goals) were prominent for the Roos.
In other games, Jack Ginnivan continued his good form in front of goals with five in Golden Square’s 80-point win against Castlemaine, while Lincoln White kicked four-goals in Strathfieldsaye’s big win against White Hills.
In the under-18 girls, Strathfieldsaye and Kangaroo Flat played out a thrilling draw.
The Storm led for the bulk of the contest, including by 14 points at three quarter time, but a 2.2 to scoreless final quarter helped the Roos share the points.
Strathfieldsaye’s Mia Ward and Kangaroo Flat’s Shelby Knoll both kicked three-goals.
In the next closest game, South Bendigo defeated Sandhurst 7.8 (50) to 5.9 (39).
Faith Joliffe (five) and Natasha Kelly (three) contributed eight of Woorinen’s 11 goals in a 46-point win against Kyneton, while Golden Square defeated Eaglehawk by 32-points.
In the under-15 girls, Strathfieldsaye Thunder defeated Kangaroo Flat, Golden Square beat White Hills, Strathfieldsaye Storm prevailed against Eaglehawk and Sandhurst toppled South Bendigo, with Lucia Painter and Lila Keck kicking three-goals each for the Dragons.
There was a pair of thrilling matches played in the under-14 seniors competition, with Kyneton emerging with a one-point win against Sandhurst and Golden Square winning at Strathfieldsaye by six points.
The Tigers trailed at both quarter time and half time, but worked their way to the front by three-points at three quarter time.
Despite some inaccurate kicking in the final term, Kyneton’s 1.5 to the Dragons’ 2.1 was enough to ensure a one-point win.
The Tigers’ Cody Young and Dragons’ Liam O’Brien and Toby Howlett each kicked two goals.
Strathfieldsaye led at every break against Golden Square, but were unable to prevent the Bulldogs from adding three-final quarter goals to win 6.12 (48) to 6.6 (42).
