The Pioneers lost to the previously winless Eastern Ranges 14.6 (90) to 8.4 (52) at Box Hill on Sunday.
A five-goal burst either side of half-time proved to be the difference between the two teams.
The Ranges only led by seven points at the 22-minute mark of the second quarter.
However, three quick goals in time-on of the second term followed by the opening two goals of the third quarter catapulted the Ranges to a match-winning 38-point lead. The Pioneers kicked three consecutive goals to get within 21 points early in the final quarter, but the Ranges steadied the ship and grabbed their first win of the season.
Ruckman Daniel Keating produced his best game at TAC Cup level.
Acting captain Noah Wheeler did his best to inspire his team-mates, while Ethan Roberts, Zane Keighran, first-gamer Will Wallace and Flynn Perez tried hard.
Roberts, Hunter Lawrence and Keighran kicked two goals each for the Pioneers.
