Two days ago, the veracity a substantial quantity of the notes came into question.
Police at Heathcote are investigating a report of $1100 worth of counterfeit $50 notes, after a woman tried to use some of the notes on Friday.
“The owner [of the business] has actually picked it up,” Senior Constable Stewart Probst said.
“The only sort of thing that picks them up is they’re slightly lighter in colour [than a true $50 note] and some of the ink seems to chip off relatively easily.”
He said the woman had been unaware the cash was counterfeit.
Police believe the woman had already spent some of the money she received for the sale of the caravan.
“There could have been more [counterfeit notes],” Senior Constable Probst said.
Police believe some of the notes the woman received were counterfeit, and some were not.
“It’s a good idea to let all local businesses know to double check 50 dollar notes,” Senior Constable Probst said.
“If you’ve got any doubts about it at all, I wouldn’t accept it.”
Police warned earlier this month of counterfeit cash circulating in the Bendigo area – namely, $50 notes.
In that instance, police said the stars in the clear window of the notes had been painted on.
Similar counterfeit notes were found earlier this year at fast food restaurants.
Counterfeit $50 notes with Chinese characters printed on them have been discovered in the past.
Senior Constable Probst urged anyone with information to call either the Heathcote Police Station on 5433 3711 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
