The Illumin8 Festival saw the sky above the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion lit up with fireworks this evening, and the building itself illuminated with animated light shows.

Fire dancers and performers are contributing to the celebrations, with a range of dances and musical features scheduled both today and tomorrow.

Festival highlights include lotus flower offerings, a walking meditation, a didgeridoo performance, and a sand mandala.

The state government last year awarded the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion a number of grants to finance the three-day celebration, which about 15,000 people were expected to attend.

Friday’s program focused on the consecration of the Jade Buddha.

Today and tomorrow’s festivities are more exuberant and open to the public.

The Illumin8 Festival builds on the success of the Festival of Light – a multicultural celebration of peace and harmony, inspired by Buddha’s birthday.

The celebration, which is known for its light and fireworks shows, attracts thousands of people to Myers Flat each year.
