A Bike Bendigo community event ride saw cyclists ride through the underpass beneath the Abbott Street road bridge, railway line and McIvor Highway bridge.
City of Greater Bendigo mayor Margaret O’Rourke said the recently completed project solved a major impediment for cyclists and pedestrians crossing the road.
"However it wasn't a simple project because it has required significant consultations with a range of authorities including VicTrack and V-Line to ensure the condition and protection of the historic brick piers that support the rail line.
"It also required significant drainage works in the creek to provide clearance under major telecommunications and other services.”
The area featured new murals created as part of Project Underpass - a collaboration between Bike Bendigo, Nacho Station and the Regional Centre for Culture.
