The car then collided with a tree with the woman becoming trapped.
Senior Constable Bullock said it took almost 90 minutes to free the woman who is suffering internal injuries.
He said the crash speed was between 90 and 100km/h with the car sustaining serious front-end damage.
UPDATE, 2.11pm: An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said a woman in her 50s has been freed from the car and is being assessed by paramedics.
An air ambulance has been dispatched.
The extent of the woman’s injuries is yet to be established.
UPDATE, 1.58pm: The driver of the Mazda sedan involved in the crash remains trapped.
Emergency crews have removed the roof of the car
UPDATE, 1.40pm: SES crews are working to free the driver of a car that has hit a tree on the Calder Highway near Big Hill.
The crash is on the southbound lane of the Calder Highway just past Belvoir Park Road.
The car is off the road but one lane is blocked to traffic.
Two paramedics, two CFA crews and two police units are also on scene.
EARLIER: Emergency services are attending a road rescue on the Calder Highway at Big Hill.
Crews were alerted to the incident at 1.13pm.
