The baby boy weighs 8 pounds, 7 ounces.
Both mother and son are doing well.
The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed of the news and are delighted.
The names given to royal babies are not usually revealed straight away, and the public is often left guessing for several days.
William and Kate took two days to announce both George and Charlotte's names, informing the Queen of their choice beforehand.

Kensington Palace put out a statement on Twitter at 5.20pm AEST saying she had been admitted to St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London.
The tweet also said the Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to St Marys with the Duke of Cambridge.
Buckingham Palace will announce the arrival of Prince William and Catherine’s third child with the a traditional bulletin on show at the palace.
The paper proclamation for the public to see at the Queen's London residence is how the arrivals of Prince George and Princess Charlotte were announced when they were born.
The formal announcement will confirm the sex of the baby and the time of birth.
As with George and Charlotte, Kensington Palace will email an initial official announcement to the press, which will coincide with a confirmation of the birth via Twitter.
News of the new arrival will be announced with the Queen and members of both families have been informed.
