The Oakleigh Chargers showed why they’re one of the premiership favourites in the TAC Cup when they handed the Rural Bank Bendigo Pioneers a 70-point drubbing at the QEO on Friday night.
The Pioneers kicked the first goal of the night, but from that point on it was one-way traffic as the Chargers cruised to a 15.10 (100) to 4.6 (30) win.
After an encouraging opening 10 minutes of the game, the Pioneers started to feel the force of the Chargers midfield group in the second half of the opening quarter.
The visitors kicked the final three goals of the first quarter and the first four goals of the second term to establish a six-goal lead.
The difference in skill level between the two teams was vast as the Chargers gave their multi-pronged forward line plenty of opportunities.
When the ball hit the deck the Chargers small forwards gave the Pioneers defence plenty of headaches.
It took until the 19-minute mark of the second term for the Pioneers to break the drought.
James Schischka snapped his second goal of the night after some good lead up play from Bailey Wassdorp and Bailey Henderson.
The third term was more of the same as the Chargers added 6.2 to 0.1.
To their Pioneers’ credit they didn’t roll over in the final term and won the quarter.
Henderson snapped a nice goal early in the quarter before Cal McCarty kicked truly from a set shot late in the term.
On a night where it was hard to find four-quarter performers for Bendigo, Henderson showed flashes of his brilliance, key defender Nathan McHugh took some nice intercept marks and acting captain Noah Wheeler tried hard to lift his side.
The Pioneers next match is against Northern at Preston on April 29.
