The focus for Earth Day 2018 to be held this Sunday on April 22 is to end the excess amount of plastic which is polluting the planet.
Plastic Wise Bendigo action group member Leanne James said plastic pollution was one of the most significant environmental issues society faced.
“On Earth Day I hope people stop to think about their consumption of plastics and commit to reducing their use of plastics,” Ms James said.
“Saying no to single use plastic bags is a good way to start.
“It is small steps such as this that will accumulate to make a difference in the long-term.”
Earth Day was first celebrated in April 1970 and 2018 will mark its 48th year.
Bendigo Sustainability Group member Colin Lambie also believes plastic pollution is a major issue.
“It’s the way that plastic breaks down that is the major problem,” Mr Lambie said.
“It takes forever to break down, whereas paper can deteriorate fairly quickly.”
“You buy things at the supermarket and they come with a polystyrene base and wrapped in plastic, this is what we have to object to.”
He hopes through Earth Day that people would become aware of the negative impact plastics have on the environment.
“It’s devastating to wildlife and the rest of our planet,” he said.
The Bendigo Sustainability group is made up from several action groups which includes Plastic Wise Bendigo.
