The notes have been circulating for the last couple of weeks and can be distinguished by “obvious flaws” in their appearance and texture.
Acting Senior Sergeant Brian Hansen said the blue colour was more pronounced and the Southern Cross in the transparent window was of “very poor quality”. They also contain different serial numbers.
He said they were found at about four fast food outlets across Bendigo and were not restricted to a certain part of the city.
“We want people to be vigilant, these notes can be easily overlooked in busy fast food restaurants,” Acting Senior Sergeant Hansen said.
“They are more fragile than normal $50 notes.”
One of the notes was uncovered at a fast food restaurant near Kennington Village.
No one has been arrested at this stage.
Anyone who finds a counterfeit $50 note can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
