This week, Bendigo Senior Secondary College is celebrating Cultural Diversity Week, and yesterday held a cultural immersion day for students from Specimen Hill Primary School.
Over the course of the day, the primary school students rotated through activities celebrating such cultures as Indigenous, Karen, Afghan and Chinese, led by BSSC students from those backgrounds.
The activities included dance, storytelling, face painting, kung fu, learning to use chopsticks, sport, and learning about traditional dress.
BSSC student wellbeing manager Kylie Hand said the day aimed to build the primary school students’ understanding of different cultures, particularly those within the Bendigo community.
But it also aimed to empower the senior students to become leaders, she said; the primary school students found it easier to relate to other young people, too.
Other activities during the week will include food events, music, art, and dance.
Indonesian, French and German cultures are among those that will also be represented, as well as communities such as the LGBTI community.
