UBC Bendigo Branch president Carol Maher said the club needed more volunteers on Good Friday to help raise money throughout the day.
“If anyone can lend an hour of their time or donate some money it will go towards the medical needs of sick children,” she said.
“The volunteers have fun on the day and you can dress up in whatever you want.
“It’s great to see volunteers come in their costumes with big smiles while they're collecting money.
“The more volunteers the merrier,” she laughed.
One night in December 1941 a raffle book was passed around the Riversdale Hotel in Hawthorn to raise money for sick children which laid the foundation for the creation of the Uncle Bobs Club in January 1942.
Since its inception over 70 years ago the Uncle Bobs Club has expanded and has several branches throughout Victoria.
Sue Harvey has been a frequent volunteer for the Bendigo Branch, following in the footsteps of her mother who was a life member of the club.
“It’s a wonderful cause, all you have to do is give up a few hours on Good Friday,” she said.
“It’s what the day is all about, helping make a difference by getting out there and rattling the tins.”
UBC Bendigo Branch will be collecting at major intersections throughout Bendigo as well as at other Easter events throughout the day.
On the day the volunteers register at the Bendigo Bowling club and are then allocated a tin and collection point at one of the various traffic lights throughout the city.
The Good Friday Appeal is an annual fundraising activity that occurs every Good Friday held on behalf of The Royal Children’s Hospital.
The Bendigo Branch in 2016 reached the total amount of $1 million raised on various Good Fridays over the 42 years since it has been active.
In 2017 the Bendigo Branch raised a record $101,900.45, which contributed to the $17.6 million total raised by the entire Good Friday Appeal.
