ELMORE’S new netball coach says competition for spots in the Bloods’ A-grade team is driving a fierce and enjoyable pre-season.
Sue Borserio, who has joined Elmore after a successful association with Kangaroo Flat, said she could not be happier with the playing group’s response to pre-season.
She is expecting the Bloods to be very competitive across all grades, when the Heathcote District season begins on April 7.
A handy list of recruits is headed by former Kangaroo Flat A-grader Mel Corbett, who is capable of playing at both ends of the court.
The Bloods have also lured former Stanhope A-grade player Lauren McKee and young shooting ace Stephanie Donnellon, from Loddon Valley club YCW Maiden Gully.
Borserio, whose impressive resume includes dual 17-and-under premierships at Kangaroo Flat, hinted at a couple of BFNL and Loddon Valley secret weapons still in the vault, who would add to the club’s existing player stocks.
“Local girls Kelsey Niven, Issy Nicholas-Smith, Carly Demeo and Hollie Hildebrandt are relishing the new training program and are completing many hours of 'homework' to get themselves into peak condition,” she said.
“If you asked me to pick my A-grade team today I couldn't do it. I've got 15 girls training hard and listening intently to my coaching, any one of them could step up and steal a bib in A-grade.
“Our goal as a club is to make finals in every grade of netball, and we think it is achievable given the preparation we have put in.”
The Bloods face a tough opening to the season against reigning premiers Colbinabbin.
Borserio said she had been buoyed with numbers at this season’s tryouts, with about 70 players seeking a spot in the club’s four senior teams.
“Our pre-season was fierce with a gruelling six-week netball based skills program, she said.
“We are now on the court and four weeks into this phase we are beginning to gel and see improvements in all areas.”
Adding to the buzz at Elmore is the impending visit of new Collingwood Magpies defensive coach Rob Wright.
The former NSW Swifts head-coach will take charge of Bloods training on March 22.
It will be his second visit to the region this year after spending time with BFNL club Kangaroo Flat last week.
Borserio said players and coaches were looking forward to learning from one of the best coaches in the game.
