Bendigo-based rural veterinary company Apiam Animal Health, which has 36 practices across the country, has entered an agreement with PETstock petcare stores to open co-located veterinary clinics, mostly in rural and regional areas.
The first of these will open next month at the Epsom PETstock store.
Apiam managing director Dr Chris Richards said the company was looking to expand its regional strategy and saw an opportunity to develop emergency and referral centres
Dr Richards said Apiam had operated in Bendigo for nearly 20 years, but had never had a companion animal clinic.
The new Bendigo clinic will be called Furlife Vet, and will offer general practice alongside emergency and referral services, with regular visits from specialists.
Dr Richards said it would be the first clinic in Bendigo that would have specialists available on a routine basis.
The centre would also have equipment expected of a high-level clinic, he said, such as a CT scanner and dental X-ray machine.
Dr Richards is confident there is a market for such a service.
“Absolutely, pet owners are demanding the highest level of service from vet services,” he said.
