BAE Systems and Rheinmetall are shortlisted for the $5 billion contract to replace the Army’s armoured fighting vehicles, with BAE Systems to base operations in Victoria if successful.
This week, Thales Australia’s land vice president Kevin Wall declined to confirm or deny whether it was in talks with BAE Systems. “(Bendigo) is the home of protected vehicles in Australia and we’re ready if someone wants to come to us with a proposition,” he said.
In July, the Bendigo Advertiser reported Thales was in talks with both companies, its own bid in partnership with General Dynamics Land Systems knocked back in 2016.
The state government confirmed Thales was not part of BAE Systems’ current bid.
A BAE Systems spokesperson said there were numerous opportunities for suppliers if the company was successful.
