YO Bendigo inclusive communities officer Dan Rees said the idea to start the community garden came from youth that attend YO Bendigo in Mundy St.
“They thought if we have something informal for young people to engage with it may increase the amount of people attending YO Bendigo,” Mr Rees said.
Mr Rees said the aim of the community garden workshop is to help keep youth engaged with the project through the need to keep the plants maintained, which will lead to more people in attendance at the YO Bendigo space.

Part of the launch of the community garden included a theory lesson where youth were able to learn about the nature of seasonal plants, how to care for gardens and how to set-up a wicking bed.
“The idea was to initially have one wicking bed and if the engagement is there with young people we will definitely set up another one and it will just grow naturally with all the kids that become involved.”
The YO Bendigo space was one of the main recommendations that was created during consultations held during the City of Greater Bendigo’s Youth Development Strategy.
