A thief has tried to steal an ATM in a burglary in Long Gully overnight.

It was about 11pm on Monday night when the offender broke in to the Champions IGA supermarket on Wood Street and attempted to make off with the ATM located inside the doors.
Sergeant Robert Walsh said the offender tied a rope to the ATM and tried to drag it loose by tying the other end of the rope to his vehicle, but he was unsuccessful in his attempt.
The car used in the burglary, which is believed to have been stolen, was found burnt out in Happy Valley Road.
It was well-alight when CFA firefighters attended.
Sergeant Walsh said the offender left the ATM significantly damaged, but the secure component of the ATM remained intact.
The offender also caused damage when he broke into the store.
It is believed the offender is a Caucasian male of about 30 years of age.
