Emergency services were called to Longlea Lane just before 5.30pm today, where a vehicle containing a sole male occupant had been travelling in a northerly direction.
“One of the limbs has fallen off one of the trees by the side of the road and just clipped his car,” Bendigo Sergeant Jason McDermott said.
“The force of the collision has forced him off [the road] through oncoming traffic into the trees there, and that’s where he’s come to a stop.”
The road was closed in both directions while emergency services responded.
Sergeant McDermott said the man sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to Bendigo hospital for further assessments and observation.
“He’s pretty shaken up by it,” the sergeant said.
Police received ‘lots’ of calls in relation to the single-car crash.
“It’s a very busy road this time of night,” Sergeant McDermott said.
“When we got there he [the driver] was out of the car. Local people were attending to him as best they could.
“The response from the local community was great.”
A nine-kilogram gas bottle, which had been inside the car at the time of the crash, threatened to complicate the situation after it became lodged under the car. But the was was removed without issue.
“The SES lifted the car up… CFA extracted the gas bottle and made [the scene] safe,” Sergeant McDermott said.
Though he said falling tree limbs were not a regular occurrence, “when they do come down they’re a hazard.”
