It follows former NBL legend Joe Hurst’s appointment as director of coaches and athlete development.
Hurst, the NBL’s most valuable player in 1988 with Hobart Devils, has replaced Jonathan Goodman, who has taken up a similar role with Hawthorn Basketball Association and will coach Sandringham Sabres’ SEABL women’s team in 2018.
Affectionately known as ‘Jumping Joe’ or ‘JJ’, he will oversee all Bendigo Basketball divisions including WNBL, SEABL, CBL, junior Braves and the domestic league, providing for, and enhancing clear pathways.
He brings a wealth of playing experience, including over 200 conference games with Northwest Missouri State University and his induction into the Bearcats Sportsman’s Hall of Fame.
Nearly 30 years on, Hurst still holds the college’s single-season shot block record.
He played professionally in the NBL with Hobart and Canberra Cannons, and in Sweden, Croatia, Indonesia and Portugal.
Hurst was an assistant coach to Ben Harvey with Bendigo Braves during the 2017 SEABL season.
He said he passionate about “instilling attitudes where athletes and coaches place equal value on enjoying the journey as they pursue their best.”
His contract is effective from January 3.
