UPDATE Saturday, 8am: The Australian cycling community is in mourning after the tragic death of an aspiring young athlete who was hit and killed by a car near Bendigo.
Cycling Australia has named the cyclist as Jason Lowndes, and his current team Israel Cycling Academy confirmed his death in social media posts.
UPDATE 7pm: A 23-year-old Strathfieldsaye man has died after this morning’s crash at Mandurang.
The cyclist was struck from behind by a Mazda sedan driven by a 20-year-old Kangaroo Flat woman at 10.15am on Sedgwick Road.
He was flown to The Royal Melbourne Hospital following the crash but died several hours later.
The driver of the Mazda, who was also taken to hospital, stopped at the scene and has been assisting police with their inquiries.
