The meet on Thursday, December 14 has drawn some of the country’s best distance runners and sprint stars.
The classic honours Czech champion Emil Zatopek, gold medallist in the 5000m, 10,000m and marathon at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki.
Bendigo University’s Andy Buchanan is among the contenders for this year’s men’s open 10,000m on the Albert Park track.
A superb year for Buchanan has included winning the Australian 10km cross-country championship at Wollongong, and the Victorian open track titles at 5000m and 1500m.
Buchanan also starred in his first race campaign in the United States earlier this year. Hit-outs for Buchanan included Los Angeles and San Diego.
Elmore’s Teleah Hayes will race a strong field in the women’s 10km.
Hayes broke the Bendigo residential record when she won the 3000m at last month’s Victorian Milers Meet at Lakeside Stadium.
The South Bendigo Athletics Club star clocked a time of 9:28.04.
Hayes won the women’s open title in the recently-run Jack Davey 5000m championship in Bendigo.
South Bendigo clubmates Taryn Furletti and Yazmin Hayes will race in the under-20 women’s 3000m at Zatopek.
Eaglehawk’s Sophie Taylor will race in the Denise Boyd 100 yards at the classic. The Melbourne-based athlete has a personal best of 11.14 at 100 yards.
Seymour College’s Maxine Paholek, a member of South Bendigo Athletics Club, will race at Zatopek in the under-20 3000m final..
