That’s why you’ll hear a huge cheer should the Gus Philpot-trained She’s Beneficial win race seven at Bendigo on Tuesday.
She’s Beneficial is Gus Philpot’s first runner since his wife Donna was tragically killed in a fall at a jumpout at the Bendigo Jockey Club in late June.
Donna Philpot, 48, died from injuries she suffered after the horse she was riding in a trial fell. She was treated by paramedics on course, but was unable to be saved.
Gus Philpot understandably put his training career on hold in the wake of his wife’s death and he’s bravely decided to make his return on Tuesday with his stable’s best horse.
She’s Beneficial, one of the favourites for the Hughes Punters Club Benchmark 64 Handicap (1100m), has shown plenty of ability in her eight career starts.
She won her maiden at Seymour by three lengths and ran second in the Elmore Cup last campaign.
Five of the seven runners in the race on Tuesday are Bendigo-trained horses.
Such was Donna Philpot’s popularity around the Bendigo racing industry, Brendon Hearps (Vungers), Anne-Maree Curran (Poderoso), Adam O’Neill (Zoot Suit Riot) and Shane Fliedner (Inaminute) will be more than happy to run second if She’s Beneficial is the horse that crosses the line first.
