Lambs: 27,000. Change: up 408.
Lamb numbers were similar, although quality deteriorated with less heavy and well finished trade weight lambs on offer. The market fluctuated, and overall there wasn't the buyer intensity to fill orders like recent weeks.
The best slaughter lambs held their prices, while plainer types lacking shape and finish showed an easier trend of $1 to $5/head. Prices reached a top of $190/head for a small pen lot of extra heavy shorn lambs weighing over 30kg cwt. The best price for young lambs was $178 for 27kg cwt, and highlighting the shortage of weight, there was only 10 pens which sold above $170/head. The main runs of heavy trade weight lambs, 22-24kg, made from $144 to $168, to average $158/head. The main price fluctuations were across the medium and lighter weight domestic lambs, where there was a lot of quality variation and buyers discounted the plainer lots. These lambs to processors ranged from $125 to $140/head. Due to the way the market fluctuated there was a wide range in estimated carcase prices, with the bulk of sales averaging from 600c to 625c/kg cwt.
Less store orders operated this week, however any big lines of well-bred small lambs continued to sell strongly from $108 to $122/head.
Some of the smallest lambs were dearer again as some buyers try to restock at less than $100/head.
Sheep: 7000
The sheep sale was more varied this week, with more ewes in varied skin lengths. Prices were firm to dearer as carcass prices lifted again.
Two exporters were particularly strong on heavy crossbred ewes, which lifted prices to an average of $129 or $7/head more than a week ago.
Most Merino sheep sold from $90 to $120 depending on size and wool, with just odd pens over $130 and large wethers making to a top of $146/head.

October 31
Cattle numbers remained fairly similar to last week, with 235 coming forward. The cattle presented for sale were in good condition and prices fluctuated throughout the course of the market. The top vealer reached $3.25 per kilo, five cents cheaper than last week’s market. Heavy steers were in good supply this week, the top steer reached $ 2.68 per kilo, also dropping 4 to 6 cents from last week. Medium to Heavy steers were in good supply as well this week, the top steer reached $2.88, ,remaining firm from the previous market. Cow numbers were limited this week, however, they sold well with the top reaching $2.34 per kilo, remaining firm for the previous week.
