Detectives believe the same offender was responsible for 19 incidents of thefts and attempted thefts from a number of cars in the Macedon Ranges on Sunday night and Monday morning.
The first occurred in Aitken Street, Gisborne, sometime after 9.30pm where a car was broken into and a wallet and keys stolen.
Police believe the offender then stole a silver 2008 Holden Calais station wagon from the same property and drove to Malmsbury.
In Malmsbury cars were broken into in Johnson Street, Barker Street, Mollison Street and Cameron Street.
The Holden was then involved in a collision with another car on Barker Street about 3am.
The offender then drove from the scene and proceeded to break into cars in Kyneton in Mollision Street, Market Street, Ferguson Street, High Street, Castles Crescent, Mitchell Street, Jeffrey Street and Redesdale Road.
The stolen Holden is yet to be recovered.
