Wearing specially-made shirts, they will run to celebrate the memory of Jude, who passed away from cancer in May, and show their appreciation for the care she received from Bendigo Health.
Jude and some family members began participating in breast cancer fun runs following her diagnosis two years ago.
While those were women-only events, this run will give all of Jude’s loved ones the opportunity to take part, including her husband Alan, her four children and her seven younger siblings.
Her sister Ange Broadbent and daugher Bec Uren see the fun run as an opportunity to say thanks to those who looked after Jude.
Money from the run will go towards a campaign to purchase three key pieces of equipment for the new hospital.
“The treatment she had was exceptional,” Ange said.
Bec added that her mum became good friends with some of the people who cared for her.
She said everyone in the oncology team, from the oncologist to the receptionist, were “awesome”, and even now would stop her to tell her how much they had loved Jude.
“They’re just lovely people,” Bec said.
Ange described Jude as “a lot of fun”, someone who was the life of the party.
She was heavily involved in some local sporting clubs, and Bec said her mum was a person who did not do things by halves: she was either completely immersed in something, or not at all.
“She was loved by everyone,” Ange added.
Jude was also a strong woman, evident during her fight against cancer: Ange and Bec said she kept a lot of her struggle to herself, to spare her loved ones pain.
Running this year without her would be emotional, Bec said, but they could not thank the hospital staff enough. “[We’re] doing it for Mumma,” she said.
